ステートメント/Artist Statement
Miniatures on the MountainA series of miniature paintings done while at Tenjinyama Artist Studios
Because of the scale, the production of these paintings required intense concentration and focus. I don’t use any optical devices, just the naked eye. I try to include as much detail as possible to render the image but there is a physical limit and this makes the process very exciting and challenging.
The end results are detailed paintings with no real detail. This contradiction is evident when the miniatures are enlarged and one finds that the controlled brush work is in fact very loose and gestural.
The subjects of the paintings are random, basically stuff that I like and like to paint, motorbikes, Scottish landscapes, Scottish castles, roses, boxing skeletons and foxes.
My reason to paint miniatures was a reaction to time spent producing large scale works.
One of my paintings, ‘A Thousand Rockers One Fuckin Bike!’ (2m x1.5m) took over two years to complete.
Although the end result was very satisfying the process was quite tiring, physically and mentally.
Also, and this is becoming increasingly important, I can produce the miniatures anywhere, there is no need for a studio and the production can become a kind of public performance, as was the case for most of these works, done in the public space at Tenjinyama or in Odori Park.

天神山アートスタジオ に滞在中に制作したミニチュア絵画シリーズ
この絵画は非常に小さなスケールで描かれているため、制作には強い集中力と注意力が必要でした。私は光学機器は一切使わず、肉眼だけで描いています。できる限り多くのディテールを盛り込もうとしていますが、物理的な限界があり、それがこの制作プロセスを非常に刺激的で挑戦的なものにしています。
完成した作品は、一見ディテール豊かな絵画に見えますが、実際には詳細が存在しないという矛盾をはらんでいます。この矛盾は、作品を拡大してみると明らかになります。精密に見えた筆致が、実は非常にラフでジェスチャー的なものだったとわかるのです。
絵の題材はランダムで、基本的には私が好きで描きたいものを選んでいます。バイク、スコットランドの風景、スコットランドの城、バラ、ボクシングをする骸骨、キツネなどです。
ミニチュアを描こうと思ったきっかけは、大規模な作品を制作した経験への反動でした。
たとえば、私の作品『A Thousand Rockers One Fuckin Bike!（千人のロッカーとたった1台のバイク）』（縦2m × 横1.5m）は、完成までに2年以上かかりました。
完成したときの達成感は大きかったものの、制作の過程は肉体的にも精神的にも非常に消耗しました。
さらに、これはますます重要になってきていることですが、ミニチュア作品は場所を選ばずに制作できます。スタジオは必要なく、制作そのものが一種のパフォーマンスとして公共の場で行うこともできます。実際、このシリーズの多くの作品は、天神山の公共スペースや大通公園で公開制作されたものです。

Jack McLean/ジャック マクレーン（美術）：活動拠点 日本
Jack McLean was born in Glasgow, Scotland.
He studied at Glasgow School of Art.
He is a 2nd degree black belt in Kyokushin and Shotokan karate, rides a motorbike and recites Robert Burns poems.
He lives in Tokyo.

グラスゴー美術学校で学びました。
極真空手と松濤館空手の二段の黒帯を持ち、バイクに乗り、ロバート・バーンズの詩を朗読します。
