「In-Betweenness：色・空間・形・文化の視覚的探求」
「In-Betweenness」とは、複数の文化的・社会的・時間的な文脈の間に身を置く経験を指します。異なる文化の中で生活したり旅をしたりする中で、この視点は私の人生において常に存在してきました。そして、それは私の作品におけるコンセプトや制作プロセスの中核的な影響となっています。
中国出身の美術家・デザイナーとして、20年以上アメリカに暮らしてきた私は、さっぽろ天神山アートスタジオでのレジデンスを通して、これまでとは異なる形で「In-Betweenness」を体験する機会を得ました。漢字と中国語の文字の意味の意外な違いや、公共の看板や広告に頻繁に使われる英語、日本のデザインに深く根付く自然からの感性などを目にしてきました。これらの経験は、私の制作における手法や素材の選択に影響を与え、共感や対話を促す作品づくりへとつながっています。
「In-Betweenness」は、私の制作プロセスにも表れています。異なる種類の紙の上やその境界を越えてインクが広がっていく様子、印刷されたイメージと手描きの線のあいだに生まれる視覚的な振動、空間の二つの壁の間から生まれる創造の可能性——こうしたものに惹かれます。本展の作品群は、さまざまな美術媒体、色彩やタイポグラフィ、自然物と人工物、そして二次元と三次元の相互作用などを通して「In-Betweenness」の特異性を探る視覚的実験です。それらは、札幌での私自身の視点から観察し、体験し、再構築された文化的瞬間の物語を形づくっています。
In-Betweenness: A Visual Exploration of Color, Space, Form, and Culture
The concept of in-betweenness refers to the experience of being situated between multiple cultural, societal, or temporal contexts. This perspective has been a consistent part of my life, particularly when traveling or living in a culture different from my own, and it has become a central influence on both the concepts and processes in my work.
As a Chinese visual artist and designer who has lived in the United States for over two decades, my residency at Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio has provided opportunities to experience in-betweenness in new ways. I have observed the unexpected meanings of Kanji characters in relation to Chinese characters, the frequent use of English in public signage and advertising, and the nature-inspired sensibilities embedded in Japanese design. These experiences have informed the approaches and materials in my practice, with the aim of creating work that fosters empathy and dialogue.
In-betweenness is also reflected in my art-making process. I am captivated by the way ink travels across and between different types of paper, the visual vibration that occurs between printed images and hand-drawn marks, and the creative possibilities that emerge between two connected walls in a space. The works in this exhibition are visual experiments that explore the uniqueness of in-betweenness—across various art media, color and typography, natural and manufactured objects, and the interplay between two- and three-dimensional forms. Together, they create visual narratives of cultural moments as observed, experienced, and reimagined through my lens of in-betweenness in Sapporo.
