Sapporo is among the world’s snowiest metropolises, enduring approximately five meters of snowfall annually.
Rather than resisting the climate, the city has adapted through an extensive underground network linking its main hubs. Above ground, however, winter reconfigures the landscape into new volumes that swallow pavements, alleys, and parks. Daily life proceeds by accepting these temporary masses and waiting for the snow to give back what belongs to the city once it melts. This interactive installation explores the unwritten social contract between Sapporo’s inhabitants and the winter. Visitors enter a fragile agreement of coexistence where every interaction leaves a spatial, visual, and temporal mark. Here, snow is not a passive backdrop but an organism with memory and a finite margin of tolerance. Every gesture negotiates that limit: the digital snowfield absorbs, resists, and slowly erases traces, mirroring how Sapporo’s streets record and eventually release the pressure of human movement.
The project was developed in collaboration with Toshihiko Shibuya, whose Snow Pallet works use the accumulation of real snow as both land art and environmental register: fluorescent under-surfaces tint the reflected light so that subtle colour shifts become a living diagram of climate and warming over time. While Shibuya’s work records nature’s agency, this installation shifts the agent and the scale: it is no longer the climate that acts on the pallet, but the human body that acts on the snow. The pallet becomes a field of social negotiation rather than a climatic archive: the same surface, a different kind of memory. Seven of these physical pallets host a real-time projected snowfield that responds to the presence and movement of the visitor, conceptualizing the daily dynamics between Sapporo’s citizens and winter. The snow carries its own internal logic — states of softness, tension, and fragility that the visitor is left to discover through contact. Each action finds its consequence; each consequence reveals something about the cost and the care of the pact.
札幌は世界有数の豪雪都市であり、年間およそ5メートルもの雪が降り積もる。この街は気候に抗うのではなく、主要拠点を結ぶ広大な地下ネットワークを整備することで冬に適応してきた。しかし地上では、冬が街の風景を塗り替え、歩道や路地、公園を飲み込む新たな雪の塊として積み重なっていく。日常はこの一時的な質量を受け入れながら続き、雪解けがいつか街に属するものを返してくれるのをただ待つ。
このインタラクティブ・インスタレーションは、札幌の住民と冬との間に存在する、暗黙の社会契約を探求する。訪れる人々は脆い共存の合意の中へと踏み込み、ひとつひとつの関わりが空間的・視覚的・時間的な痕跡を残す。ここで雪は静的な背景ではなく、記憶と有限な許容限界を持つ有機体だ。すべての身振りはその限界と交渉する。デジタルの雪原は痕跡を吸収し、抵抗し、ゆっくりと消し去っていく——人の動きの圧力を記録し、やがて解放する札幌の街路を映し出すように。
本作は渋谷俊彦との協働によって生まれた。渋谷の《スノー・パレット》シリーズは、実際の雪の堆積をランドアートと環境の記録として活用する。蛍光色の底面が反射光を帯色し、雪面に生じる微細な色の変化が、気候と温暖化を映し出す生きた図像となる。渋谷の作品が自然の作用を記録するのに対し、本作はその主体とスケールを転換させる。パレットに働きかけるのは気候ではなく、雪に働きかけるのは人間の身体だ。パレットは気候のアーカイブではなく、社会的交渉のフィールドとなる——同じ表面に、異なる種類の記憶が宿る。7枚の物理的なパレットの上には、訪問者の存在と動きにリアルタイムで反応する投影雪原が広がり、札幌市民と冬との日常的な力学を体現する。雪はそれ自体の内的な論理を持っている——柔らかさ、緊張、脆さという状態を、訪問者は接触を通じて自ら見出していく。すべての行為はその結果を生み、すべての結果はこの協定の代償と、その維持に必要なケアについて、何かを静かに明らかにする。
