The name “it’s half past six” comes from the time I have been working on this project. The character was first drawn in 2018, its a nihilist alien that uses music as an escape. Each of the illustrations is inspired by a song, making this project a drawn playlist, as of today 133 songs have been illustrated.

All of my family members from my fathers side are musicians; so growing up music played a really important part of my life. The sound of my grandfather playing the piano always accompanied the cooking sessions of me and my grandmother. One of my first memories with my dad is him showing me a big brown box that was the home of his most precious instrument, his trumpet, I remember feeling astonished every time I would hear him play it, as well as the the piano and accordion. With my father I also remember the countless times we sat down on YouTube and took turns showing each other music, this sessions would go on for hours. All of the Abaroa family reunions turn into jam sessions, and most of the speaking topics are music related.  Because of this I was introduced to a lot of different genres from a young age, and this sparked a curiosity within me that ended up making me constantly try to find more, I spend a lot of my time in LP stores or roaming around the internet trying to discover new sounds. When I was younger I stumble across Japanese Jazz/ Funk from the 70´s, I was left speechless by the songs as well as the cover designs; to this day I think this era has the most amazing covers and a lot of my all time favorite songs, Sadao Watanabe, Shigeo Sekito, Jiro Inagaki and his Soul Media, Terumasa Hino, Casiopea, among many others.

In conclusion this illustrations are just an ode to my ancestry, and love for Music

Sapporo has a really special place of my heart, part of my love for it comes from going to precious hall (shoutouttoconnor), their sound system made me experience music and sound in a way I never imagined you could. The quality of those speakers, equalization and division of sound could bring me back to like when I die.

Renée Abaroa (Guadalajara, 1998) completed the BA of Visual Arts at ESARQ (Escuela Superior de Arquitectura). She has an illustration diploma course from the university NABA in Milan. She has done residency programs in México, Iceland and Japan; her work has been exhibited in Mexico, Italy, Iceland, Canada, Austria, Japan, Portugal and South Korea. She worked as an artist assistant for six years.

Her work explores the idea of unknown space. She thinks that when you arrive at a new place there is always a sense of total uncertainty; but as you walk through it and experience this new unknown you start to find elements and patterns that remind you of previously inhabited spaces, generating comparisons and connections. As Wittgenstein would say “The common behavior of mankind is the system of reference by means of which we interpret an unknown language.”  She moves through various techniques including painting, photography, video, sound art, installation and embroidery.
