間もなく is an exhibition exploring the idea of unknown space. When you arrive to a new place there is always a sense of total uncertainty; but as you walk through it and experience this new unknown you start to find elements and patterns that remind you of previously inhabited spaces, generating comparisons and connections. As Wittgenstein

would say “The common behavior of mankind is the system of reference by means of which we interpret an unknown language.”

「間もなく」は、『知らない場所』というアイデアを探求する展覧会です。新しい場所に到着したとき、そこにはいつも完全なる不確実性が存在します。しかし、そこを歩き、この新しい未知の場所を体験していくと、以前住んでいた場所を思い出させる要素や、パターンが見つかり始め、それらの比較やつながりが生まれます。

ウィトゲンシュタインが言うように、”人類の共通の行動とは、未知の言語を解釈するための参照体系である”。ということなのです。

Going to supermarkets, convenience stores and pharmacies in other countries is as interesting as roaming the halls of a museum. It’s a multi sensorial experience that feels familiar yet so different in each city. The design and material selection of the packaging of products is a direct consequence of the environment, a collective memory of the society. The sounds that surround you, made up of a collage of always changing components create particular soundscapes: the tone of the register machines, the greeting you receive, the background music, even the clothes people wear based on the weather modify how the cruising of them through the aisles sound. 7/11 is both in México and 日本, even though the actual places look almost identical, its interesting seeing Onigiri and Inari sushi instead of tacos and burritos; Wilkinson Carbonated Water instead of Topo Chico; Pocari Sweat instead of Electrolit or Sake instead of Caguamas and Tonayán.

違う国のスーパーマーケットやコンビニエンスストア、ドラッグストアに行くのは、美術館の展示室を歩き回るのと同じくらい興味深いものです。そこにあるのは見慣れたものでありながら、それぞれの街で大きく異なる、様々な感覚が刺激される豊かな体験です。商品のパッケージのデザインや素材の選ばれ方は、そこの環境が直接反映されていて、その社会の集合的な記憶といえます。レジの機械の音、店員の挨拶、BGM、さらには天候によって人々が着る服が、通路を移動するときの音に変化を与えます。セブンイレブンはメキシコにも日本にもあります。店舗そのものはほとんど同じように見えますが、タコスやブリトーの代わりにおにぎりやいなり寿司を、トポ・チコの代わりにウィルキンソン炭酸水を、エレクトロリットの代わりにポカリスエットを、カグアマスやトナヤンの代わりに日本酒を目にするのは興味深いものです。

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Renée Abaroa  is a multidisciplinary artist from Mexico. Her work could be defined as dislocated cinematography created from the investigation of everyday life, resulting mostly as a sound product with visual support. She explores various themes including time, sound, typography, as well as the creation of sensory atmospheres and different characters. She uses film and musical references in most of her pieces.

レネ・アバロアはメキシコ出身の多くの専門分野を横断するアーティスト（マルチディシプナリー・アーティスト）。レネの作品は、日常生活のリサーチ活動から生まれる逸脱した映像であり、視覚的な要素によって導かれるサウンド作品であることも多い。時間、音、タイポグラフィ、感覚的な雰囲気やさまざまなキャラクターの創造など、レネは多角的なテーマを探求している。また、多くの作品に映画や音楽を引用している。
