Tomu Osaki, an invited artists for Tenjinyama’s open call 2021, has been working on his research and artmaking founded on a hypothesis. What if Shigeru Aoki, the ‘Fruits of the Sea’ painter with whom Osaki shares his geographical background, left his footprints on the land of Hokkaido?

* Osaki’s artist website

Supported by the fact that Aoki had acquired his artistic subject from mythologies of all ages and countries, the artist has been trotting all around Hokkaido with his primary focus on the Jomon remains.

Captured in the photo below is the Oshoro Stone Circle. Twenty-minutes drive from Otaru took us to the location. The writer heard that these stones were originally from the sea, and it only gets more curious when we know very obviously that they’ve been placed on the land several kilo meters away from the shore. The designer, the cause, or the methods… sky’s the limit when we think about it.

This is Mt. Nishizaki Stone Circle, located on top of a little hill.

We also visited Fugoppe Cave, which you can see from Mt. Nishizaki. Inside, the photoshoot was prohibited for preservation reasons, but the team witnessed many pictures — including the one resemble a human with two wings — curved on the wall.

At Otaru Museum of History and Nature were the enormous earthenware showcased. Ones in the picture were all excavated from remains in Otaru and Yoichi.

The Ebisu Rocks was the final destination of our research in Yoichi. “It’s almost like a Dali” — The rocks’ magical shape, anti-gravity, have seemed to fascinated the artist.

A few days after, what we found in his paintings were the shadows of the stone circle or the Ebisu Rocks.

According to the artist, the red-colored outlines are adopted from Aoki’s work.

Besides, Osaki has also been working on an orthodox tribute to the late painter’s masterpiece ‘Fruits of the Sea’. For the presentation of those works, a show is scheduled in a gallery in Sapporo this November.
