Earlier this summer, I left the academic environment I had long relied on. Like riding a bike without training wheels for the first time, I started making.
Lately, my work has been focused on adaptation and mimicry. It’s the joy of perfect imitation—the strange delight of being deceived and not deceived at once. But this kind of “camouflage” reflects me, my thoughts and what I see, as honest as glass.
The word “硝子” (glass) has the look of kanji but reads like English, this is a unique way in which Japanese blend and thread different systems. I first heard this word from Kinki Kids’ song named “硝子の少年”. So this word for me linked up with clear, hard-edged youth. I hope I can be like glass.
My inspiration this time comes from various things. Films such as “Nami no kazu dake dakishimete” (波の数だけ抱きしめて) and “Karaoke Terror”(昭和歌謡大全集), Sugiyama Kiyotaka (杉山清貴)’s song, and Arashi (嵐) perhaps.
Besides my paintings, I have been going to volunteer Japanese classes to practice the language. I decided to translate some of my previous poems into Japanese, as my final exam (maybe I am still very attached to academic settings). I write more in English than in my native language Chinese. The unfamiliarity of a non-native language allows me to write more carelessly. By the time I translate them into Japanese, it gives them a subtle difference in emotion, expanding the boundaries of language and, in turn, broadening the boundaries of my perception and expression.
