■ 展覧会「アミグダーラ AMIGDALA」について

In Italian Amigdala refers, among other things, to a stone tool made by Homo Erectus about 2 million years ago.
The Amygdala is already a step forward compared to the first stone tools, it’s a proof of the manual and cognitive growth of this ancestor of ours.
These evidences of our past, of our slow transformation and at the same time of all the deep  knowledge we have and still needs to gather to understand all this that fascinate me immensely.
This exhibition is born out of this feeling, to carve out of wood the symbol of our growth through time and adversity.

アミグダーラとはイタリア語で約200万年前にホモ・エレクトスが作った石器を限定的に総称します。アミグダーラは最初の石器群に比べ、すでに一歩前進しており、私たちの祖先が手作業と認知の面で成長したことを証明しています。

私は、このような過去の証拠、ゆっくりとした変容の証拠、また同時にこのすべてを理解するために私たちが持っていてまだ集める必要のある深い知恵の証拠に、とても魅了されています。

この展示は、私のこのような気持ちから生まれたもので、時間と逆境を乗り越えて成長してきた私たちのシンボルを木から彫り出そうとしたものです。

 

■ アーティストについて

For several years now the search for the origins of both Man and Life in general has been the theme of my sculptures.
I started  4or5 years ago with the Spirals series.

The spiral is the symbol of continuous becoming, a shape that contains within itself a movement from infinity to infinity, that is, without beginning and without end. Can be possible? How can we find out?

Last winter I was in Tenjinyama art studio for three months during which I was able to visit the Mikasa City Museum Annex, which have a vast collection  of fossils and ammonite in particular. I spent an entire day  drawing and photographing, observing shapes, dimensions, colors, states of evolution and conservation. Just a day but was an incredibly journey into the past that is both fascinating and disconcerting.
Returning to the “base camp” of Tenjinyama art studio I immediately began working on the ammonites with drawings and sketches. Finally, back in my studio in Kagawa I began the creation of the first sculpture about all this entitled “AT THE BEGINNING”.

近年の私の彫刻制作におけるテーマは、人間と生命全般の起源を探ることです。私はこのテーマによる制作を、4、5年前に「螺旋」シリーズから始めました。

螺旋は連続的な変化の象徴であり、無限から無限へ、つまり始まりも終わりもない動きを内包する形です。できるだろうか？どうすればそれを見つけることができるのだろうか？

一つ前の冬、私が3ヶ月間天神山に滞在している時、三笠市立博物館別館を訪れることができました。別館には膨大な化石コレクションがあり、特にアンモナイトのコレクションが充実していました。丸一日、絵を描いたり写真を撮ったりして、形、寸法、色、進化の状態、保存状態などを観察したのです。たった1日でしたが、魅力的であると同時に不愉快でもある、私にとって信じられないような過去への旅となりました。

「ベースキャンプ」である天神山アートスタジオに戻った私は、すぐにアンモナイトのデッサンやスケッチに取りかかりました。天神山での滞在を終えて香川のアトリエに戻り、「AT THE BEGINNING」と題した、これらすべてを題材にした最初の彫刻の制作を始めることになりました。

This year when I returned to Tenjinyama art studio I found the “Sapporo City Museum Activity Center” which is a paleontology museum  close to the art center.Here too I found a beautiful collection of fossils and ammonites and above all a very enthusiastic and trained staff who explained and illustrated everything I was interested in and let me draw all the fossils and ammonites I wanted. Then  they let me see very close and touch (finally!)some ammonites and on top of all these, during the work shop there,  I was even able to see and try myself how to find ammonites in the stone by gently and carefully carving it.  Thanks to the museum professors who, despite my poor  Japanese language, passionately explained me everything we had before our eyes.

Was greatly moving watching so close these acient evidences of life!!!

Equally fascinating was hearing and seeing  the profound knowledge the staff has, how many in a myriad of different fields  one must have in order to understand what you have in your hands. All this knowledge can only be accumulated by possessing great passion and determination and I am deeply grateful to all the museum staff for this short but great opportunity.

今年また天神山に戻ってきて、私はアートスタジオの近くに古生物学博物館である「札幌市博物館活動センター」を見つけました。

ここでも化石やアンモナイトの美しいコレクションを見つけることができたのです。そして何よりも、とても熱心で訓練されたスタッフがいて、私が興味を持ったものすべてについて説明や図解をしてくれ、欲しかった化石やアンモナイトの絵を描かせてくれました。

そして、アンモナイトを間近で見たり、触らせてもらったり（ついに！）、その上、ワークショプでは、石の中からアンモナイトを見つける方法、そっと丁寧に彫って、自分で試してみることもできました。 私のつたない日本語にもかかわらず、目の前で熱心に説明してくださった博物館の専門職員の方々に感謝します。

このような太古の生命の痕跡を間近で見ることができて、とても感動しました！

自分の手元にあるものを理解するためには、どれだけ多くの異なる分野の知識を持たなければならないか。このような知識はすべて、大きな情熱と決意を持つことによってのみ蓄積されるものであり、私はこの短いながらも素晴らしい機会を与えてくれた博物館のスタッフ全員に深く感謝しているのです。
