ステートメント/Artist Statement
This exhibition marks the culmination of my fourth residency in Japan, and my second residency at Tenjinyama Art Studio in Sapporo. Across both iterations (2024 and 2025), the site has functioned as both a spatial and conceptual container—facilitating the development of performative works that navigated a darker, personal narrative, and of themes of suffering and futility.
The current installation articulates a shift—tonally, materially, and chromatically. Where previous works produced at Tenjinyama were grounded in restraint and melancholia, this project reintroduces a visual language associated with contentment, play, and speculative optimism. It proposes a form of utopian scenography, not as idealism, but as a counter-structure to earlier works.
Embedded within the installation are referential elements: objects, materials, and compositional gestures that echo and respond to the body of work previously generated here. These fragments function as both continuity and disruption—inviting a layered reading of the space as archive, as rupture, and as reconstruction.
The return to colour— deliberately withheld for a while—is not simply aesthetic but strategic. In reclaiming these tonalities, the work constructs a temporary zone of affective suspension: a spatialised proposition for escape, safety, or emotional neutrality.
Ultimately, the installation serves as a gesture of recognition and celebration toward Tenjinyama—not only as a host, but as an active context that has shaped the trajectory of the work. It reflects on what it means to push on with one’s practice with a shifted perspective.

この展示は、私にとって日本での4度目のアーティスト・イン・レジデンス、そして札幌・天神山アートスタジオでの2度目の滞在の集大成となるものです。2024年と2025年の2回にわたる滞在を通じて、本スタジオは空間的・概念的な容れ物として機能し、苦悩や虚無感といったテーマ、そして個人的な闇に触れるパフォーマティブな作品群の展開を支えてくれました。
今回のインスタレーションでは、トーン、素材、色彩において明確な転換が示されています。以前、天神山で制作した作品群は抑制と憂鬱を基調としていましたが、本作では、満足感、遊び心、そして思索的な楽観主義を伴う視覚言語が再導入されています。ここではユートピア的な舞台美術を提案していますが、それは理想主義ではなく、過去の作品に対する対抗的な構造としてのものです。
インスタレーションの中には、過去の作品群に呼応し、あるいは応答するかたちで、オブジェクト、素材、構成的な身振りなど、参照的な要素が散りばめられています。これらの断片は、継続性と断絶の両方として機能し、空間をアーカイブとして、また断裂や再構築の場として多層的に読み取ることを観者に促します。
一時的に排除されていた色彩の再導入は、単なる美的判断ではなく、戦略的な選択でもあります。これらの色調を再び取り戻すことで、本作は感情的な浮遊状態の一時的なゾーン、すなわち、逃避、安全、あるいは情動の中立性を提案する空間として構築されています。
最終的にこのインスタレーションは、天神山への感謝と祝福のジェスチャーとして位置づけられています。天神山は単なるホストにとどまらず、作品の軌道そのものに影響を与える能動的な場であったのです。本作は、視点が変容した後でもなお、制作を継続するという行為の意味を静かに問いかけています。
