If a kite swims, a theater is on a cart; reflection on a project of Swimming in AIR

Min-hyung Kang

Performance in contemporary art often presupposes a space outside of black box theater such as a gallery or museum, whereas a theater assumes a building with a proscenium stage. In Trà’s project, a theater is not a space, yet it is a concept that consists of theatrical elements. For this, the actors, the script, the direction, and the methods are all converted to those of non-theatric.

The theater in this project is metaphorically delivered to you “on a cart,” and a cart is a container of particles of theater elements. Things are packaged and boxed like a little black box theater and delivered to where you are. When you visit this exhibition at Tenjinyama Art Studio, which is supposedly a cart sent from Trà, you get to see different treasures and presents that she sent, and you can put a thing back there that would go back to her or somewhere else in future.

When we were saying theater was stranded due to border restrictions, Mami Odai, the director of Tenjinyama Art Studio, beautifully put a kite story together, saying how it could swim around in the air (as air as well as Artist-In-Residence). If a kite swims, a theater is on a cart. A cart is on the wheel, but this wheel is not on the earth. Just as we send anything on the internet and mail, a theater comes to you. The front wheel of this cart is heading to Sapporo, and the back wheel is ready to roll back to where it comes from. I hope that the kind audience in Sapporo would receive the theater on a cart and hopefully fill the cart brimfully.
