今回のプログラムはガラスを生成するところまでが目標なので、ガラスによる造形はありませんが、参加した子たちには各々ガラスで作りたいものを描いてもらいました。

As this workshop sets its goal in producing glass, shaping the glass is not a part of our plan, but we asked participants to draw things they want to make once the glass gets made.

レクチャーの中で、ガラス作家の上杉さんから、ガラスによる造形の特徴を聞かせてもらいました。

「ガラスはどんな形でも作れる素材。薄くして電子機器の絶縁に使ったり、グラスファイバーのように繊維にすることもできる」

また、「実はガラスのコップというのは立っている液体なんです」という物理学に触れる話も。

The lecture by the glass artist Uesugi san taught us about features we should know when shaping the glass;

“Glass is the material we can make ANY shapes out of. We can thin it out to make an insulator or make it into a fiber.”

“A standing cup made of glass, actually, is a standing liquid.” Physics work magic sometimes.

窓や食器というイメージが先行しますが、よく考えてみると非常に多様なものがガラスを用いて作られています。

参加アーティストの深澤孝史さんが描いたのは、ガラスのもっている、あらゆる金属を溶かし込むことができるという特性から、核のゴミ（放射性廃棄物）を封じ込めて標本にするというアイディア。これは実際に行われている方法です。

When we think of glass we think of windows and cutlery, but if you observe carefully enough, many more and diverse things are made of glass.

The artist Takafumi Fukasawa, having learned that any kind of metal can be poured into glass, drew out his idea of packing radio active wastes into glass to make a physical sample of them. This method, in fact, has already practically used.
