「From Amazon to Olympic」は札幌市のさっぽろ天神山アートスタジオ、韓国光州市のBarimが共同企画した展示で、12月10日から28日まで2つの場所で同時に開催されます。参加アーティストは、相互に関連をしているものの異なる作品をさっぽろ天神山アートスタジオとBarimそれぞれに展示します。だけど、同じアーティストによる2つの展示を同時に観覧することができる人はいないという状況を意識しています。
世の中は止まるのに、世界最大のショッピングモールのアマゾンはより激しく動きます。 アマゾンのロゴを眺めると、AとZの間に矢印がおかれています。 それは、AからZまですべてを売るという意味であり、アマゾン川に対する西洋のイメージ、つまり巨大さとエキゾチックな感じをロゴに込めようとしたそうです。
日韓関係の悪化、パンデミック、そして日本政府の入国制限により国境が封鎖された状況でも2020東京オリンピックは2021年に開かれました。オリンピックという世界の平和と協調という理想を売るショッピングモールは、アマゾンショッピングモールと同様に休むことはありませんでした。米国の大統領バイデンは北京オリンピックを外交的な理由でボイコットするかもしれないと言いました。このことからも、オリンピックは文化とスポーツで国際交流するという以上の意味を持っているのが明らかでしょう。
アジアから見ると、未知の、そして一番遠い世界であり地球の最後の希望と言われるアマゾン川に対するイメージから、オリンピックという「国際交流」イベントのイメージまで、その上、純粋で睦まじく感じられる「国際」と「交流」という言葉そのものを問う今回の展示は、Barimとさっぽろ天神山アートスタジオの交換アーティスト・イン・レジデンスプログラム「White Letters」の活動成果発表（2021.03)に連関する展示です。
参加アーティストは、旅たつことのできなかった前回の「White Letters」という札幌への旅程にオンラインで参加したバン・ジェハ、ジョン・ユジン、今回新たに参加するはずだったキム・イクヒョン（キム・イクヒョンと玄宇民）、日本からは三原聡一郎とオランダ在住の萩原留美子。札幌と光州の2つの展示では、5名/組のアーティストが異なる作品を展示し、二人のキュレーター、カン・ミンヒョンと小田井真美がテキストを添えます。
もし、ひとつの展示しかみられない、2つの場所で開催されている展示の両方を見ることができなくても、パンデミックの中わたしたちがずっとそうしてきたように、その向こうに見ることのできない展示風景を想像することができる。2つの展示、離れた世界をなんとかつなげるポイントがきっとあるはずです。

From Amazon to Olympic은 광주광역시의 바림, 삿포로시의 삿포로 텐진야마 아트 스튜디오가 공동기획한 전시로, 12월 10일 부터 28일까지 두 장소에서 동시에 열립니다. 참여 작가들은 바림과 텐진야마 아트 스튜디오에 각각 (연관된 그러나) 다른 작품을 전시하고, 이 두 전시를 동시에 볼 수 있는 사람은 없다는 것을 의식하고 있습니다.
세상은 멈추지만 세계에서 가장 큰 쇼핑몰 아마존은 더욱 부단히 움직입니다. 아마존의 로고를 자세히 보면, A와 Z 사이에 화살표가 있습니다. A부터 Z까지 모든 것을 판다는 뜻에, 덧붙여 아마존 강을 보는 서구의 시선, 거대함과 이국적인 느낌을 담으려고 했다는 유래가 전해집니다.
한일관계의 악화, 팬데믹, 그리고 일본의 쇄국 정책으로 인해 국경이 봉쇄된 상황에서도 2021년 2020 도쿄 올림픽은 열렸습니다. 세계의 평화와 화합이라는 이상을 파는 올림픽이라는 쇼핑몰은 아마존 쇼핑몰과 마찬가지로 문을 닫지 않습니다. 최근 미국의 대통령 바이든은 베이징 올림픽을 외교적 이유로 미국의 참가를 보이콧 할지도 모른다고 했습니다. 올림픽은 분명 문화와 스포츠를 교류한다는 것 이상의 뜻을 가지고 있습니다.
아시아에서 보면 미지의, 가장 먼 세계, 지구의 마지막 희망으로 여겨지는 아마존의 이미지부터, 올림픽이라는 ‘국제 교류’ 행사의 이미지까지, 순진하고 화목한 ‘국제’와 ‘교류’라는 단어에 물음표를 던지는 이번 전시는 반재하, 정유진이 참여한 지난 White Letters 레지던시와 발표(2021.3) 에서 확장된 전시입니다.
White Letters의 떠나지 못한 삿포로 여정에 온라인으로 참여했던 반재하, 정유진, 그 후 새롭게 참여하기로 했던 김익현(김익현과 현우민), 일본에서 참여하는 미하라 소이치로, 네덜란드에서 참여하는 하기와라 루미코의 작품이 바림, 텐진야마 아트 스페이스에 각각 다른 작품으로 연결되어 전시되어 있으며, 두 기획자 강민형, 오다이 마미가 글을 보탰습니다.
비록 두 장소에서 열리는 전시를 둘 다 볼 수는 없지만, 팬데믹 하에 계속 그래왔듯이 저 너머 보이지 않는 전시 풍경을 상상하며 두 전시, 두 개의 먼 세상을 어떻게든 연결지을 수 있는 지점이 분명히 있을 것입니다.

From Amazon to Olympic is an exhibition co-curated by the Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio in Sapporo and Barim in Gwangju, held from Dec 10 to 28, 2021 simultaneously at two places. Participating artists exhibit (related but) different works at Barim and Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio, respectively, and are aware that no one can come to see both exhibitions.
The world stops, but Amazon, the world’s largest shopping mall, keeps moving. Closely looking at their logo, you see an arrow between A and Z. In addition to the meaning of selling everything from A to Z, they seem to name their company from the western view of the Amazon River, its grandeur and exoticism.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were held in 2021 despite the pandemic, and even with borders closed due to Japan’s policy, and the deteriorating relations between Korea and Japan. The Olympic shopping mall, which sells the ideal of world peace and harmony, never closes like the Amazon shopping mall. Recently, US President Biden said he might boycott the Beijing Olympics for diplomatic reasons. The Olympics are clearly more than just exchanging culture and sports.
This exhibition throws a question mark on the naive and harmonious words ‘international’ and ‘exchange,’ dealing from the image of the Amazon, which is considered the unknown, the most distant world from Asia, and the last hope of the earth to that of the ‘international exchange’ event called the Olympics.
It is also an extension of the previous White Letters project, a residency and presentation in March in which Ban Jaeha and Jung Eugene participated.
From Amazon to Olympic invites Ban Jaeha and Jung Eugene, who participated in the undeparted online journey to Sapporo of White Letters, Gim Ikhyun (Gim Ikhyun and Hyun Woomin) who newly joins to a new journey, Mihara Soichiro from Japan, and Hagiwara Rumiko from the Netherlands. Their works in two venues are different but connected, and the two curators Kang Min-hyung and Odai Mami contributed texts.
Although it is impossible to see both exhibitions, as it has always been under the pandemic, there may be a connection to be found between the two exhibitions and the two distant worlds, imagining the invisible exhibition landscape beyond.
