Artist Statement:

The Smartphone as Shrine/Temple

I would like to thank the Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Center for the time and space to exhibit this small show of collages that I created with found materials in Sapporo.

I really like identifying sacred space, places that humans designate as special. In Japan there are many such places.

I continue to visit many shrines and temples in and around Sapporo. Many are very small and are hidden away almost in plain view. I really enjoy the feeling of age and history they give me.

Observing people with their smart phones, the phones seem to fulfill a lot of what temples and shrines do in Japan for Japanese people. They provide community as temples. They give people safe space to express their desires about the world around them as shrines do.

I have attempted to make a number of collages expressing some of these feelings using found materials that speak to some of the above.
