■ 出展アーティストについて：

トム・プロクター（Tom Proctor）は、イギリス出身のアーティストです。この数年は、台湾の台北で暮らし、制作活動をしていました。台湾での滞在の際に、ライフドローイングや、ポートレート画や絵画作品などを通して美への考え方を探求しはじめたのです。

Tom Proctor is an Artist from the UK. For the past few years he has been living and working in Taipei, Taiwan. Whilst in Taiwan he started to explore ideas around beauty through the mediums of life drawing, portraiture and paintings.

■ 今回の展覧会について

台北で暮らし始めの頃は、バルコニーを覆っている「鉄の柵」がとても醜くみっともないものに見えていました。台湾の人々に言わせると、都市計画での「痛々しい景観」だと。どうして、人は、自身でまねいた「檻」に住みたいと思えるのか、と不思議でした。

台北の生活に慣れてきた頃には、カフェ文化を楽しみはじめ、この鉄の柵の背景には、色彩と美が反映された生活があると気づかされました。その街が、内側に隠された美を「閉じ込めていた」ように思えました。そんな考えが美を表現した絵の作品に反映されているのです。この天神山では、窓–枠、ライフドローイング、抽象絵画という技法で、「閉じ込められた美」という考え方を表現した作品を展示したかったのです。

 

Exhibition Information:

When I first moved to Taipei, I found the “iron cages’ which cover the balconies to be very ugly and unappealing. Taiwanese people said they were an “eye sore” on the urban landscape. I was wondering why people would want to live in what appeared to be self-imposed “prisons”. As I became more familiar with Taipei, and started to enjoy the Cafe culture, I realised that beneath the Iron Cages, often lived lifes of colour and beauty. It was as if the City was “trapping” the Beauty inside. This idea allowed me to reflect on my work drawing forms of Beauty. Here, at Tenjinyama, I wanted to present works which follow this idea of “Trapped Beauty”, using Window-Frames, life drawings and Abstract Paintings to express these ideas.
